چکیده

The inhalation of noxious fumes causes damage to the air passages and alveolar walls. The response covers a wide range, depending upon the nature of the gas, its concentration in the lungs, and the duration of exposure. Certain irritant gases, notably chlorine and ammonia, have an immediate effect on the upper respiratory tract, with intense burning in the throat, choking, and attacks of laryngeal spasm. Other gases which include nitrous fumes exert a less violent reaction at first but are commonly followed by an acute pulmonary oedema and bronchiolitis. This may be due to the fact that their relative insolubility in water allows deeper penetration of the bronchial tree. The purpose of this paper is to describe two cases of acute bronchiolitis, following the inhalation of nitrous fumes, that were observed in Sheffield in 1956. One patient died.

Pulmonary effects of acute exposure to nitrous fumes.

Four cases of poisoning by nitrous fumes are reported. Three patients presented with pulmonary oedema, and one of these progressed to the phase of bronchiolitis obliterans; the fourth patient presented with the clinical features of bronchiolitis obliterans. Pulmonary function studies in both phases showed a predominantly restrictive pattern of ventilatory abnormality with a tendency to hypoxaem...

Bronchiolitis obliterans organizing pneumonia following nitric acid fume exposure.

We describe a patient with clinical, radiological and pathological features of bronchiolitis obliterans organizing pneumonia. Investigation showed that this was likely to have been a delayed consequence of inhalation of nitric acid fumes (containing nitrogen dioxide) after a fire. This case shows that thorough investigation of the aetiology is important not only in clinical management but also ...

Bronchiolitis obliterans. Report of three cases with detailed physiologic studies.

We describe three patients with bronchiolitis obliterans seen at our hospital during the last two years. Their ages were 25, 49 and 69 years. One developed the disease secondary to a probable viral infection, another inhaled fumes, and the third was exposed to unknown precipitating factors. Lung biopsy showed changes compatible with bronchiolitis obliterans in the first two, while in the third,...

Dental erosion in workers exposed to inorganic acid fumes.

Changes in the colour and, structure of the teeth in workers exposed to strong inorganic acid fumes have, we believe, been recognized for many years by the workers themselves. Various measures of protection have, in fact, been unofficially adopted by them, and these we shall discuss below. Because these changes do not give rise to any loss of time or earnings, and because the affected workers h...
